  For such an ambitious project, Brady Corbet proved he still can't manage it. Rhythmic problems, especially in the second half, dramatically uneven and unfocused, and with a tone which perceives uneasiness, mostly through inconsistent aesthetics. The price to pay of wearing its mannerisms on the sleeve.

  Sarah Kane's script is excellent, but the film tries to match Kane's violent, avant-garde narrative frenzy and everything gets a little bit too over the top. If directed by someone with more subtlety than muscle, it would have been a masterpiece.

  As much as we can point the influence of "The Shining", there is no way to look at "Hereditary" without the acknowledgment of a new bold filmmaker. Being familiar with Ari Aster's past work in short-films, I was maybe excessively cautious while experiencing his first feature. Before "Hereditary", Aster has delved in cringy, taboo-themed dramas that boasted such disturbing intensity, that calling them horror-worthy would be bland.
