This movie beautifully contemplates what it means to live a life worth living. Unlike other films where the film ends in the main characters death, this one continues showing his bureaucratic coworkers contemplate and debate the reasons for Watanabe's actions.
It is a biting commentary on Japanese society in the 50's but is also a warning to everyone that no one can teach you how to live a full life. You merely need to decide to and do what what you can with the time you have.
