That being said, I think the first time I watched this I had an expectation in mind and when it didn’t meet this idea in my head I was quick to dismiss it. This is one of the craziest fuckin movies I’ve ever seen. Pretty much as soon as Dellamorte talks to “she,” I had no idea what was going to happen next. Not scary at all, pretty much just becomes pure slapstick honestly. I was 33 minutes into the movie when I paused briefly and said “holy shit all of this has happened in a half hour?” I have read there is deeper philosophical meaning to this film, but for me a lot of it is difficult to decipher. Watch it with friends or your significant other and enjoy the ride cause this shit is moving different.
I sadly watched the 2011 prequel first (several years ago) and I’m disappointed I did as this was substantially better in pretty much every way. I didn’t remember too much from the prequel but there were certain elements that I was reminded of while I was watching this one and it definitely muddied some of the charm. Recently I’ve been watching a lot more found-footage horror films, and this one is definitely the creepiest one in awhile. The way it opens and has so many elements akin to a documentary on this “real life tragic event” just made it that much more disturbing.
