Joaquin phoenix delivers a great performance, matched with impressive body transformation, but still struggles to rid himself of identifiable traits (e.g. his laughter, groans, and quiet derangement).
Lynne delivers a tightly-woven thriller, with phenomenal shots and character behaviors that are entirely unpredictable. Displays many issues (military PTSD & sex trafficking) without forcing her opinion. It’s a part of the world of the film in the same way these issues are a part of many of ours.
Would have liked better sound mixing and a bigger psychological villain for Joaquin’s character to contend against.
Visually stunning, Eggers has one of the best eyes for composition. However, the film felt confused and seemed to drag the audience with it. Aspects of mythology could have been explained to clue the audience in, characters' emotions and actions could have been more complex (e.g. Kidman's entirely too-easy betrayal), and the love story more convincing. Also, the tree was too over-the-top.
However, you can't fault the man for not trying. Eggers continues to take risks and establish himself as an auteur.
Amazing dialogue. Great acting and cast. Characters are all fairly similar to one another and the movie’s energy was relatively static in its intensity.
