  Impossible to overstate the rage I felt watching this. 

  Intellectually I knew all of this was happening. 

  Seeing it is so much worse than you think. 

  (Also an incredibly well-constructed film - edits, soundtrack, framing, photography, all of it is amazing)

  I can’t decide if this is brilliant or ultimately hollow. 

  
  Edit: decided on the latter. 

  Technically, it’s gorgeous: sharp framing, good performances (though Leto, as always, can get fucked), teeth-grindingly oppressive score. 

  But…

  It’s not fair to rank a movie two decades old by today’s standards, but something about this feels cruel and judgmental. In the years since this came out the opioid crisis has ripped through America. The movie isn’t about script drugs, obviously, but it’s hard for me…
