If you enjoy visually stunning films—brightly lit, with serene East African landscapes and beautifully shot army drills—where comparatively not a lot happens, then this is one for you.

Of course the most homoerotic and sensual army film I've ever watched was made by the French...

While absentmindedly gazing outside my bedroom window today, I inadvertently noticed my 3 a.m. commotion-causing neighbours nervously glancing over their shoulders as they waited by their gate across the road dressed in the usual dressing gowns and slippers, sneaking in one by one into the front seat of a car parked on the pavement, before hastily scurrying back into their homes—so let's just say, it was the perfect inspiration to finally watch this film.

That toilet scene is as iconic as it is utterly disgusting.

Conjures up an enthralling, ethereal, and deeply yearnful atmosphere through its intimate framing, expressive colour palette, and use of jerky, undercranked shots, all to the recurrent tune of sorrowful strings.

Roleplaying each other's cheating partner is one way to process it and bond together, I guess.

Love everything about how this film was shot—from its liberal use of long takes and isolating shot composition to its murky, desaturated colour palette and diffused, natural yet eerie lighting—but what I love most is how it gradually breaks its own visual conventions as the case evolves, heightening the sense of unease and evoking increasingly visceral reactions.

In particular, the scene where the detective frantically rushes home after a flurry of disjointed images flashes through his mind, the initial discovery when he gets there, and especially his final realisation sent shivers down my spine that I'm unlikely to ever forget.
