I Was a Teenage Frankenstein 1957
I see I'm in the minority on this, but I liked this film quite a bit. It was mostly what I was hoping it would be. Great makeup design, brisk pace, and I especially liked the (admittedly not-so-subtle) allusions to disaffected youth and teenage alienation. Almost like a proto Edward Scissorhands take on the monster. It's fun 50's drive-in schlock with extra pathos, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

While it definitely isn't one of the best F13 films, I always thought that it got a bad rep. I think there's a lot to like here, especially Derek Mear's aggressive portrayal of Jason. It plays kind of like a greatest hits compilation of the first 4 films, which I think is kinda cool. Not amazing, but good for what it is. I admittedly liked it a lot more when I was younger, and ended up seeing it in theaters…

Them! 1954
There were many films about giant bugs made throughout the 1950's, but for my money this one outdoes the competition by a long shot. Easily the best film of it's type. It's surprisingly effective and suspenseful considering the type of movie that it is. It's still far from Hitchcock, but there's a feel for pacing and atmosphere that most other films of this type lack. It's basically everything you'd want out of a movie about giant radioactive ants in New Mexico.
