A step back for Bong Joon-ho after the five-star masterpiece of Parasite, but that means we’re in Snowpiercer and Okja territory, which is still better than 90% of the filmmaking happening today. Nobody does tone, genre, and manic, violent social commentary better than Bong. Robert Pattinson gives a 10/10 performance that blends comedy and tragedy seamlessly. And I’m always here for unhinged Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.

The Substance 2024
Magnificent. I love it when a film is so clearly a precise execution of the writer/director’s singular vision. Completely unhinged, but never out of control. Incredible performances and production design. Nearly perfect.

Conclave 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
There is a lot of commentary about “the twist” and whether it works or not. The conventional wisdom is that it doesn’t and that it takes away from the film overall. I disagree.
The film’s thesis, as articulated by Cardinal Lawrence in his homily, is that we should reject certainty and embrace faith — “the mystery.” This is as true about the Catholic Church as it is about any number of aspects of modern life — and movie-making for that…

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 2024
Mad Max, like Star Wars, is entirely original (sure, it’s a franchise, but new stories are not based on anything existing) which makes it inherently more interesting than many other pieces of IP. Much of Star Wars has become very derivative of itself, unfortunately (Andor, TLJ, etc. being the exceptions), but Mad Max continues to shine and show what creative, innovative, and world-building franchise filmmaking can be. Put Furiosa in the Prequel Hall of Fame.
