Highly entertaining, but unfortunate in painting a totally inaccurate portrait of WA Mozart. Did more than its fair share of popularizing an image of WA as a vain, philandering good-for-nothin’. Great use of soundtrack though, and especially memorable are scenes involving excerpts from Don Giovanni, Zauberflote and piano concerto K. 482.

Painted Fire 2002
An amazing film about an uncompromising artist seeking artistic freedom during a chaotic period in Korea’s ancien regime. KT Im is an expert in drawing out the suffocating aspect of the late Joseon (also see Sopyonje), pervaded with overlooked splendor and missed opportunities (both in aesthetics and politics) - and the main lead here is none other than Choi Min Sik of Oldboy (so, enuf said).

Leaving Las Vegas 1995
Possibly Nick Cage’s greatest performance on screen…! Has some Dostoevskian backdrop (ie alcoholic gambler looked after by a prostitute with heart of gold) but not overly sentimental and in fact pretty bleak throughout. Also great use of soundtrack, especially some memorable songs by Sting (my one and only love).
