Really enjoyed this, the aesthetic is top notch, the plot is entertaining, it pushes a clear feminist agenda without absolutely beating you over the head with it.
While there were a few intentionally funny moments in the film I did not find this to be an intentionally non-stop funny movie the way that unfortunately many other viewers in the cinema did. I think this movie is sincere, and I think the intentional overacting and line reading is a clear tribute…
This feels like the kind of movie I will enjoy a lot more the second time I watch it when I already know the plot. Very stylish, and a great story, but definitely not the easiest to follow because of its highly stylised editing.
It’s a lot more of everything than I was expecting for a movie this old.
What a beautiful film in every aspect. The cinematography is top notch, the soundtrack fits perfectly, the movie grabs your attention from start to finish. There’s only a small amount of dialogue and an even smaller amount of martial arts but it just really grabs you. After only two films (this and Dragon Inn) King Hu is rapidly becoming one of my favourite Chinese directors.
Seen it loads of times before, it’s an absolute Christmas classic even if some of the funniest lines are ones that probably weren’t intended to be, Arnie’s stunted delivery just makes it.
I don’t understand how this has a 2.8 rating, there are so many Christmas movies that are so much worse. This is very classic, very 90s, very seasonal.
