Having loved all animals but cats in particular my entire life, and having thought of more than a few I’ve had while watching, I can’t claim to be an impartial viewer. What I can say is that this is the most magical and inventive movie of 2024, fully worthy of comparison with the high ground of Miyazaki and early Disney it strives to match and does. Even with strong competition in both, it deserves to be Best Animated and Best International Film, and truth be told, it should be up for Best Picture over at least a few movies that got nominated.
