This movie grabs you towards the end almost surprisingly. Brought me to tears and I had a lot of mixed feelings about the plot, which is great because it pushes me to think about this more and more. Lobotomies were not as common at the time of the movie but otherwise relatively accurate.
Also lmao the way Danny devito is in this
The movie itself was super fun and made to be a light-hearted watch for the most part. I think that the more social-forward messages/themes in this movie were made for people who are perhaps just starting to think about things like feminism, because for many it felt a little shallow in how it was covered. It was a good way to introduce the concepts to those who are unfamiliar, and also probably great for younger girls who are just starting to develop their own confidence.
Music was also great! Very much enjoyed how it fit into the plot too.
I honestly didn't expect to love it so much but everyone in this movie musical is so talented. You can tell that Ariana Grande took her voice lessons seriously to get her voice to sound more operatic and the fact that Cynthia Erivo sang while doing her own stunts is absolutely crazy. The subtlety of Galinda's facial expressions even in the opening scene was beautifully done.
I am also so glad they had the scene where Galinda first dances with Elphaba. Tore my heart into pieces. I don't think I am the same person after watching this ~ changed for good. <3
