But I'm a Cheerleader 1999
While I enjoyed the movie, I regret how it fails to acknowledge the profound trauma these camps inflict. While this might be difficult to incorporate in a comedy, I feel it is very necessary to prevent the story becoming its own parody and doing injustice to those who unnecessarily suffered through conversion therapy. Jokes about traumatic experiences and flawed institutions can be very welcome, but only if they, in some way, do acknowledge the suffering, instead of scraping the surface. Perhaps the film should have leaned into utter madness much more, like Bottoms and Heathers.
