The Watermelon Woman 1996
Explorations of queerness, Blackness, misogonoir, film history, representation, lesbianism, power and the beauty of allowing oneself to follow ones dreams and create ones own path and the search for those throughout history who have done the same against similar odds. I had never seen a movie like this, blending documentary and interviews among a narrative of uncovering the hidden history of Black cinema in Philadelphia. Sapphic and sweet and funny and empowering. A beautiful girl-gazey lesbian sex scene. A heart work that moves with the pacing of the central characters interior journey. Feels like a gift I was lucky to recieve.

Young Soul Rebels 1991
Early 90s musings on 70s class and race and political factionalism in London via an unbelievably attractive cast and amazing soundtrack of club funk. Scary homophobic sexual and police violence scenes. Fun themes of the political power of emerging forms of media and mapping of the divides across imperialist society and the opportunity for love and dancing among those who are constantly surveilled in their secret places. Beautiful costuming. Queer love story wrapped in a brutal murder plot. Fear and love and the audacity to do both.

I smiled all the way through this absurd and gorgeous movie about a witch avoiding all types of cages
