A bizarre experience. Every piece of nuance or surprise was fully fabricated by my imagination and did not come to fruition. Any stirrings of a mutiny? I thought so. Any possibilities of espionage and trickery? Not nearly as much as my mind conjured up. That the movie would actually end with Tom Hank’s’ defeat? Wrong!
However, underneath that disappointment is a grippingly genuine, if a bit cheesy, war drama. It does a surprisingly good job of building suspense and showcasing the panic and uncertainty that exists within combat. The actual specifics of naval combat may have been incorrect, but the underlying emotion rings true.
