For such a short film, this meanders about in some inanely-written (albeit very stylish) exposition & drawn-out circular comedy for a long time! While the first half-hour of this is mostly very entertaining to look at, it's hard to invest in much of anything happening. Which is a shame, because it builds up to such an interesting effect showcase of an ending. The story is really second-rate, but I mean...it's a body horror movie. if you're here to see bodies get all horror-ed up, it definitely delivers. It just takes longer than you'll probably want it to.

Boston Strangler 2023
Intensely by-the-numbers crime journalism yarn. There's a fine sense of mood set & it's overall just competently done, but it's all rendered so immediately irrelevant in the sea of almost identical pieces done in recent years.

Women Talking 2022
Months of my anticipation for this vanished instantly when I saw the Brad Pitt production company in the opening of this girl film. I'm convinced this is part of some sort of psyop by him to continue his wake of destruction by continuing to pigeonhole mainstream feminist cinema into being simultaneously as dense as a sledgehammer, as obvious as a billboard, and somehow still utterly toothless in its faux-rage. There should just be a massive subtitle burned into the screen…

The Fabelmans 2022
God, what self-indulgent drivel. It's incredible how a love letter to the 'magic of cinema' can somehow lack any lingering bit of it. This is cinema designed solely to tick off every single box required to clean up come award season so it can pat itself on the back, which is redundant because no amount of awards could ever cause as much self-congratulation as the film already contains. Fascinated as to what appeal there is for laypeople (other than a fear of not being "in on this years big thing" I suppose)
