From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China 1981
The film’s air of Western supremacy and condescension towards traditional Chinese theatre and music traditions has not aged well. Stern is more interested in teaching the Chinese about the West than the other way around - despite the number of times he and others say otherwise. Many cringe-worthy moments of him critiquing the “emotionless” performance of Chinese musicians or of him showing only mild amusement toward Peking opera and gymnastics.
