I'll echo what others say about this being a Lifetime movie starring Dennis Hopper. It's a film with bad southern accents, fake sweat, dubbed moans, and little to no chemistry between the actors. Others mentioned it's a rip-off of the French film Diabolique, which I have not seen, but I was amused when Dennis' character casually mentions through dialogue the female lead was inspired by the film to carry out her actions. Our beloved tramp gets a chance to shine in a film, acts out, gets fired, poses as a woman, returns to set, charms all, reveals his true form, goes slapstick postal on cast and crew, and then gets thrown into a well. Silly and typical Keystone. It was nice to see Fatty Arbuckle at the beginning, and I must say Chaplin makes a fetching female.
Huie's Sermon seems like a lazy effort. The film is mostly a single shot of bishop Huie Rogers with a quick glimpse of a nearby dilapidated neighborhood, a hint at the sad contrast of an electrifying worship service located in a powerless reality.

I rarely give 5 stars to a film, but as I was watching this for the first time, I just felt so immersed in the neighborhood. Spike Lee really gives the viewer a front seat to a hot summer day in Brooklyn. We are introduced to one character after another and soon see their lives intertwine. We witness the tension, the camaraderie, the conversations, and the observations around these everyday interactions. So many discussions emerge from the scenes regarding race…
