Saw this on a nasty little 16mm print at anthology. Severely impacted viewing experience I must say. But nothing could prevent me from appreciating Dreyer’s immaculate blocking, Gertrud’s far off look (when is she not far off) as she tells us all life, all love, is a dream. Every time the light suddenly falls on the beast’s face like a fucking lance slashing and gleaming through the misty air I lost my miiiiiind. The first time you see his face illuminated, when he sets her down in the bed after he’s taken her through those interminable hallways with all the drapes billowing, I actually was jolted awake from my slightly snoozy state…..magnifique (not the horse)
