Social climber Harvey wants to marry a girl above his station, but he falls for the older, wiser Simone Signoret instead. Signoret is great, and deservedly won the Best Actress Oscar. Top notch Oscar-winning script, too.

One of the first women-in-prison movies, and far less lurid than the exploitation fare that followed in later decades. Eleanor Parker is great as the naive inmate who grows hardened by her time in the pokey. It was strange to see the actress who played the Baroness in The Sound of Music in such environs.
