A fitting end to this sprawling series of films. The phantasm films have a very special place in my heart and I'd been waiting for this for so long. It's a film that kens exactly fit film it is and fit its function is. The moments with Reg and Mike in the present reality are touching and feel like a perfect coda to a series that many people have grown up with.
The visuals were a letdown but there's only so much one can do with so little money so I don't hold it against them.
Great idea quite well executed. I was entertained and I was along for the ride. Came in with middling expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Certainly worth a punt.
Beautiful. Wonderful. Matt Holness is a wonderfully skilled writer and director and in this he is at his absolute peek. Beautiful soundtrack and sound design with excellent bleak visuals of the Norfolk Broads melded with a beautiful examination of childhood trauma and its impact on adult life. I expected nothing less from him. You can see a nice development of the visual language and scoring used in his short "A Gun for George" really coming into its own in this.
The puppet design is perfect in every way.
Everything about this film is an utter delight.
Watch it fucking yesterday.
Something of a letdown. I'm a huge fan of Cage and a huge fan of Lovecraft and especially this story in particular.
I adored the expansions they did of the characters fleshing them out into human beings (since such things are always lacking in Lovecraft's writing); the visuals were stupendous and sumptuous and an utter joy for the eyen. Perfectly captured the inexpressable images of the short story.
Very let down that the story was told in chronological order though.…
