  This is a bizarre movie. There are so many story and directing choices that I don’t think land. The first 40 minutes are genuinely terrible, but it does get better. Structurally it was a disorganized mess and early on I really struggled to get Zoe Saldana’s motivation. The whole time I don’t think it worked as a musical. That being said I thought Karla Sofia Gascon was great and I’m glad she is nominated. Best picture? Not so much.

  It’s so pretty. I love movies where the setting is a character. The whole thing has so much yearning it aches. Every time I watch it I have a different experience and I think that’s aging? Maturing? Who’s to say.

  Famously I did watch this for the first time ever when I was 17 on a plane seated next to a Catholic priest.
