heartbreaking how being robbed your freedom as a tunisian woman can be so allegorical for the whole country of tunisia which suffered so badly under the french growing influence and imperialism. a story about a daughter, her mother and the many noble women holding onto each other while each fighting their own pain, inflicted by careless men of the upper class who show neither respect nor regard towards the women who entrapped in the palace have no other purpose than to serve them, with no way to escape the hierarchy of class, but with a magical voice which renders memories of a life never lived

Tough watch bc there’s nothing worse than Israeli virtue signalling and sellouts who make hummus for them and also bc I have no interest whatsoever in understanding the intricacies of a demoralised schizophrenic people who are each in their own way trying to rationalise the literal and symbolical blood on their hands.
