Started this movie like 2 years ago and got about halfway through. Totally dug it but found it a little depressing and inscrutable to I let it hang for a while. Got to see it last night at the Metrograph and was thoroughly impressed and relieved at the more or less “happy” ending. It might’ve been saying something like “all nightmares end.” Reminds me of the Laura Dern scene in Blue Velvet where she talks about her dream and says…

Kinda crazy these movies have just passed me by. I’m pretty familiar with the original though I’ve never seen it. In a world over saturated with remakes and reboots this movie is surprisingly good. It’s hard to be on anyone’s team but the apes. James Franco’s character should have died for his crimes. Or gotten some kind of comeuppance. I love ape liberation like there was no point where I could condemn any of their actions. Sure most of the humans on earth will be wiped out but once things were moving in that direction you can’t really fault the apes for rising up. Go apes.

This movie was so weird. It is really only carried by its 2000s charm which it barely falls in the pocket of. First of all the color and cinematography in this movie clash so hard with the premise and the acting. They tried to be too cinematic and failed. The leads are weird and not charismatic. There’s a black guy who they all call “Horse.” Definitely  some funny lines when the 2000s highschool jock trades bodies with the nerd girl…

Ok haven’t seen this since it was in theaters, but I’m back. This movie has soooooo much to love and faithfully adapts the source material in rlly charming ways. It’s an ambitious and in many ways successful anime adaptation, but I think some of the execution really hinders it. From
The beginning the movie hooks you with the vibe and the visuals and gives you a sense of what to expect with the effects. But just a few minutes later…
