Really took me by surprise how much I loved this. Been listening to Bogdanovich talk about movies for years but hadn’t yet seen anything of his. Being his first film, I’m curious how much of what I saw in this, stylistically, will transfer over to his other films.

Hearing and seeing The Pink Room scene in a theater was otherworldly.
The thing that stood out most to me was how great of an ensemble this was. The beginning parts of this, where we spend a lot of time with the whole family unit, there’s just a sense of familiarity and comfortability that doesn’t always come across well on screen. These moments give us all we need for the rest of the movie. Really enjoyed this.
Going into this I expected something a bit more propulsive. Pope’s dead? Need a new one…STAT!!!!!!!! Quick, witty dialogue, with over the top acting, and monologues that made you go 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 mic drop.

The lega-sequel is such a hard needle to thread. If you make it too much a carbon copy of the original, it’s impossible to not compare and is never as good as the first. If you swing for the fences and do something totally new and original, and it doesn’t work, people wonder why the attempt was made. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Gladiator II unfortunately is a mediocre at best, carbon copy of its predecessor.
