I think more madcap comedies should end with the characters breaking down crying at the end. If The Hangover happened to me I would very sincerely Not Be Okay.

Hidden somewhere in this film is a solid 2 and a half star movie, a film that is a little transphobic and a lot racist, but otherwise avoids being outright terrible. Unfortunately this film obstinately, recklessly, against the counsel of its lawyers and the advice of medical experts, insists on being a musical.

None of the actors can sing, none of the songs have a melody, and yet, every 4 or 5 minutes, a character will say two sentences in a row that rhyme, and that will be your cue that the score for this part is not the score but, in fact, "a song".

The first time I heard about this movie it was described to me as a film about a dance contest and I had no interest in watching it. Then I heard it described as a harrowing anticapitalist psycho drama about a dance contest and I ran out to see it immediately. Did not disappoint.

Saw Candyman yesterday and boy, Candyman is a lot better than I thought it would be. I was expecting Candyman to be a campy fun slasher movie, but Candyman is both extremely scary and a much smarter, more nuanced movie than I had been led to believe.
