It's hard to know how to be objective about the merits of a film so obviously for me. An experimental film that mixes elements of the musical, animated, and procedural drama all for my benefit? A film anxious that quotation and reproduction is the sickening intellectual underbelly of all art? A film about the disturbing ways that male sexuality both venerates and denigrates its subject? Oh movies you know me so well.

I loved this movie. Not every moment. Not every choice. But I loved it. The visuals are beautiful without composing themselves into a series of money shots for my benefit. The individual characters neither begrudge nor solicit the camera. They simply exist in our frame, going about their business with exhaustion and enthusiasm in equal measure.

This movie came largely recommended into my life in a way I struggle to understand now. Are we so starved for stylish anti-capitalist film with loose feminist gestures that we'll take anything?
It's not that the performances are bad. The actress playing the ex-mob accountant forced to convey her menace through a thick haze of undesired medication does admirably.
The visuals are similarly rarely boring. Lots of bright yellows, blues, and reds, that remind you of better Almodovar films.

It's hard for me to say anything about Soul that isn't a reflection on my feelings about Pixar writ large. Maybe, in an enviably more innocent time I would have felt about the movie the way I did about Walle or Up. But now I understand the Pixar machine to be smarter version of the Disney machine; one that spits out bitter sweet revelation in the same way that the high-Disney animated films produced happily ever afters.
