It's impossible to convey the magnitude of the outrage that a film like this provokes. The State of Israel, in an abuse of power backed by several European powers and the United States, has practiced extermination against a vulnerable and decimated population. How can we repair the horror and death they have sown among so many Palestinian communities?
Frivolous, implausible, bourgeois, politically conservative, sophisticated, evasive. And yet, delightful from beginning to end; pure entertainment that the actors, led with brio by the genius of Blanchett and Fassbender, clearly enjoy with every word and every gesture. It looks like there will be sequels. Let's hope they don't fall into the perverse temptation.
Many films, and there can never be enough, have denounced the horrors of racism in the US, but few have embodied with images and sounds this unspeakable abjection like Nickel Boys. A devastating film, but one that does not revel in explicit cruelty or sensationalism. Its narrative strategy of choosing a first-person camera is not only an aesthetic tool, but an ethical one: putting the victims in the foreground without re-victimizing them. A gem that is at times difficult to watch.
