The Kid 1921
I love seeing the growth of the directorial and editing prowess of Chaplin’s work. while still owing most of its visual style to the conventions of the theater and vaudeville - you start to see bits and pieces of more intricate camera work.
also with this and the circus, chaplin heard “never work with kids and animals” and he said “hold my bowler hat and cane”

American Fiction 2023
this movie had such a good premise and such brilliant talent to pull it off. what was advertised was 6% of the film, and 94% was one of the worst and undercooked family dramas i’ve ever seen. this felt like a student film expanded to a feature film. it could’ve been one of the most brilliant satires of the past few decades but got lost in indulgent and cringeworthy dialogue with some of the most bland and over-expositional characters.
jeffrey wright deserved better. he’s ridiculously brilliant

Casablanca 1942
definitely going to have to sleep on this. i didn’t have an insanely visceral experience that made me think this is the best thing ever - but the finale certainly is one of the best ever.
