Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon 1998
I struggled with a star rating for this flick, so I went with my old, reliable 4 star. Could have gone a little lower, maybe, but I gave The Monkey 4 stars too, so you can't really trust me.
The fact is this film has ecstatic highs and some pretty disappointing lows. At times, it has incredible, revelatory things to say about love and life, and very interesting ways of representing those thoughts, then, sometimes, we have something that looks and sounds like it was filmed for a BBC miniseries (derogatory).

Mickey 17 2025
You know Rob Pat is one of the greats because you see Mickey 18 for two seconds and you're immediately like: "okay, what is wrong with this guy."
The end of the movie is more or less ripped whole cloth from Nausicaa, but I won't tell Miyazaki if you don't. The creepers even look remarkably like the ohms and are the exact same kind of ugly-scary-cute. But again, do not bring this up at the next Ghibli all-hands meeting.

Guy Who Has Only Seen Two Wong Kar-wai Movies: "I'm getting a lot of 'In the Mood for Love' and 'Fallen Angels' vibes from this.
This does walk an interesting middle ground between the Yearning of the former and the irreverent lunacy of the latter. I think the second of the two stories in the film is stronger, but both manage to be totally crazy while still taking themselves seriously enough to make you care about the crazy characters.
It doesn't hurt that this flick continues Wong's proud tradition of casting the most beautiful lead actors you've ever seen.
