The Neon Demon 2016
"Style over substance" seems to be the most important argument surrounding this film -- and that is a dishonest way of looking at it. Primarily because there is no way to separate aesthetics and meaning and reality -- they are all the same, but also because all of those complaining about The Neon Demon's lack of soul seem to forget that a lack of soul is precisely what this movie tries so hard -- and so beautifully -- to depict.
Sometimes substance is overrated. And, just sometimes, like in flicks like this one, beauty is not only everything. It is the only thing.
