This is a rewatch after having grown a greater appreciation of kaiju fare, watching more Showa and Heisei era originals.

Look, I still am not overly enthralled by this outing, but have definitely found more to like.

For one, Vera Famiga is making a lot of sense…but what kind of Hays Code nonsense was her characters ending…

Had a lot of fun with this Heisei Mothra adventure, where Godzilla is in full moody jerk mode, and Mothra needs to slap him around a bit to knock some sense into him.

The sweet opening and relationship between Auntie and nephew in the early stages of the film had me invested, but the focus of the film keeps shifting so often, it’s hard to stay invested.

As my attention drifted I started Googling the film, and reading up on its poor reception by the Tamil people it portrays soured the rest of of viewing.

The balance between the personal and wider political aspects of Funny Boy are off, and the duelling stories don’t really ever feed depth or insight into each other, they just feel like two seperate stories, lazily lumped together.

Quintessential MCU, but the MCU at its best, and at its freshest.

There isn’t much to gripe on with this film, but I’ll get my one fault out the way early, which sadly, is Simu Liu, who plays the uber straight man, coming across very wooden, with only the most minimal emotional range. He is easily overshadowed by every other actor in the film, but I’m confident, as he grows into the role, and Marvel learns how best to utilise him,…
