I haven't seen the original film but I was very pleased at how competent and old-school this version of the story is. I was a bit reluctant to seeing Russel Crowe as this incredibly bad guy at first, but he kinda grew on me and the second half of the film made him pretty bad ass.
The conclusion is a bit odd though, and made it hard to understand the characters and their motivations.
The score absolutely RULES though.
Very cool first part but all the cult thing and the twist ending felt very shallow to me. Very competent directing, though.
It's been a long time since a film gave me the chills like Mississipi Burning did. Today, Freedom Summer seems both near and far. But seeing where we come from in such a raw way made a huge impression on me.
If the near absence of recurring black characters (almost every time we're with them, it's to see them suffer) and the over-heroisation of the two main characters can be a bit of a shame, this blend of historical film (and even so, it was made not even 25 years after the events) and investigative film is devilishly effective, intense and moving.
A modern Western of impressive visual power, Los Colonos suffers a little from a mise-en-scène that sometimes lacks a little intensity.
The more political turnaround in the final third reinvigorates a somewhat basic plot (notably because of its main character, which is good but maybe lacks a bit of depth) and leads to a truly disturbing conclusion.
