"It is easy to die well, It's not easy to live well"
This is a film not only about the occupation of Rome by the Germans but more about the patriotic spirit and moral qualities that (some) people keep alive even during the toughest times.
I won't forget soon the last sequence with the little boys looking at the execution of the stoic and inherently good priest, or the moment when the mother of the boy was murdered in the street. There is some visceral imagery employed in this film, such as the torture of "Episcopo" during a harsh but eventually unsuccessful interrogatory by the Germans.Translated from by -

If the trust is broken in such ways... hardly could things be repaired. However, Kieslowski leaves a hopeful ending, but it is bitter-sweet as theis relationship will never be the same again.
