Admittedly I'm not a huge fan of punk. So it's hard for this movie to resonant especially now that I'm in my 40's. I appreciated how it encapsulatedtl the moment and was impressed by the musicianship.
The film sears with a raw energetic movement yet seems aimless. I guess I would have had to been there or just be a bigger punk fan to get it. Either way, it was weird hearing people complain in 1980 knowing a lot are probably still complaining today but this time saying how better things were.
Cheap, fun trash. Kids don't do drugs.
This was a trip down memory lane. Another movie I watched over at Dad's while he worked the weekend.
I remember watching part of this on HBO as a kid. I'd seen Batman in theaters and experienced the brilliance of Nicholson. This film made me realize the range of a great actor.
Is it perfect, no. A bit hammed up in parts but DeVito has the chops of being a solid director and actor.
As a kid I picked up it in the middle and watched it till the end and was like whoa. Rewatched as an adult and it still hits.
Boudo is a perverted, demented version of Harpo Marx. He straightens out the bookseller's love life by forcing himself on his wife and maid.
Yet all I read about is the lovely quirkiness to the tramp lifestyle. Not sure what Renoir was aiming for. The classism theme is there but it seems lost upon such an unbalanced wretched main character. Waiting for short film sequel of letting Boudu drown. 😮
