  Phantom of the Paradise 1974

  This gets the same review as Xanadu:

  COCAINE: The Movie. 

  (Xanadu: the budget was spent on drugs BEFORE filming and it shows. In Phantom, they must have known better because the set design is inspired.) 

  It is terrible. It is audacious. It is bewildering that it has incredible reviews. Don’t be fooled: this film is awful but it must be viewed. I mean that in the most guarded way possible.

  Vacant characters with no discerning motivation. Confused musical numbers that don’t propel anything forward or offer any meaningful message. Too many ideas that cannot be supported by an incredibly weak script. Where is the character development? Why am I supposed to care about these people? Incredibly offensive to the trans and Mexican communities who were clearly not consulted on their lived experiences.  Style over substance if you enjoy dollar store Baz Lurmahn meets Stomp. Enjoy your awards for the most transparent virtue signalling I’ve ever encountered, dudes.
