I heard "Western film, 1960", and came expecting sanitized characters with white duds and no development who won handily in the end. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was NOT what I got. The cinematography and story aren't exactly the most in-depth, but they're much more polished and thought out than what I expected. The movie kept me entertained and subverted my expectations. Yul Brinner and Steve McQueen totally stole the show. Excited to see how it matches up to it's inspiration, Seven Samurai. For a grade, I'd give it a 7/10. It exceeded my expectations, but those expectations were already fairly low.
I really don't know what to think. I was told that this movie was both God and gospel but that's really not what I got. It was amazing, but the expectations were set higher than any film could ever hope to achieve. The use of lighting I found particularly attention grabbing. Music was used expertly, too, as is typical of Scorsese films. Forgoing any expectations, I'd probably give it a 9/10. Mafia tales always steal my attention and this one was no different, even on a small screen.
Absolutely wonderful. The kind of movie that takes you on an express ride to a truly interesting world with no stops and no strings attached. The score in this movie is absolutely untouchable. THIS is why westerns are my favorite genre. Even the scenes that appear mundane (getting water, waiting for the train, etc.) are shot and structured in the most wonderful ways. As I said, this movie had a chokehold on me. 10/10, unquestionable.
Of course it does have…
