Geylang 2022
Likely the worst film I’ve seen in a decade.
For the record, I believe Singapore has come up with many great films over the past few years- I Not Stupid, Ilo Ilo, A Land Imagined, etc. so this isn’t a gatekeeping of a certain ‘class’ of film. For people who dislike films like the latter- Geylang isn’t abominably slow or some weird “read into it” kind of thing, it’s the total opposite. Yet, so far from enjoyable.

Oppenheimer 2023
In my forays into the opinion-threads and articles (mostly the opinion-threads) about the ‘Barbenheimer’ thing that’s going on, I’ve read that Barbie is a “cool movie”, but Oppenheimer is an “experience”. In this context, it’s usually used to justify an opinion that Oppenheimer blows Barbie out of the water. I disagree, in that I loved both films and that they simply fulfilled different parts of an ‘aesthetic longing’, we’ll say. However, the idea that Oppenheimer is an “experience” is totally correct.…

The first 20 minutes of this film are an odd watch.
Later, you understand that it’s because this film is goading you into a mindset that preps one for its unique humour and nuanced message. From the halfway point I was probably slapping my knee and clutching Rachel’s arm every minute in crazed laughter.
