Mike Leigh’s Palme d’or winning drama with Timothy Spall, a career-best Brenda Blethyn and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Long lost family without the help of a specialist intermediary! Where was Nicky Campbell when you needed him. To be fair, though, that was quite the party. Awks. Oscar Best Picture list.

Sleepy Hollow 1999
Tim Burton’s gothic tale which has all of his usual tropes. A homage to Hammer Horror with Christopher Lee cameo-ing as the Judge, a host of familiar faces including Christopher Walken as the horsemen and Johnny Depp with his clipped English accent. He does seem to spend the whole film getting blood squirted in his face or fainting! Let’s just gloss over Jeffrey Jones’ involvement! Corsets abound in this enjoyable sinister whodunnit. The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! 1966
Dated Cold War farce directed by Norman Jewison in which a Russian submarine runs aground on an American island. Carl Reiner plays the bumbling every-man, Eve Marie Saint is his fit wife and Alan Arkin is the head of the Russian ground force, trying to steal a boat to free the sub. Lots of guns and have-a-go heroes. Meh. Oscar Best Picture list.

The Dresser 1983
Luvvy drama set in WWII Britain with a touring theatre company. With a “shouty” Albert Finney and a camp nasty “dresser”, Tom Courtenay, whose role is PA come make-up artist. Think Mr Burns and Smithers against a theatre backdrop. Oscar Best Picture list.
