I hate analyzing movies by comparing them to others, especially when the film is this unique. Nevertheless, it is almost inevitable to think that The Beast seems like a David Lynch approach to Godard's themes, with a little Charlie Kaufman spice. At several moments, I thought of Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Alphaville, Pierrot le fou, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I don't think the movie can be reduced to this mixture.

On the one hand, i really enjoy Godard's experimentalism in this movie: the montage, the way he introduces his own commentaries, the awkwardness of the scenes that seek to portray the confusion of modern life. On the other hand, the more I watch his films, the more it bothers me the way he conceives his female characters.

It's a good movie, but some elements of Guadagnino's direction that work very well in the begining (the use of the soundtrack, the overstylized shots, the slow motion and close ups) are too exagerated in the final part. In the end, Guadagnino puts the camera on the ball, on the rackets, on the floor, abuses of close ups and slow motions until exhaustion... seems like the type of thing some inexperient director (wich he is not) would do to draw atention to himself. I was really enjoying the movie, but his exaggerations in the end completely broke my immersion.
    Still, it's a good movie.
