Another very solid Deray/Delon collaboration as a cardshark gets unwittingly drawn into the crosshairs of some corrupt old bastards.

There are skillfully handled suspenseful moments and a killing that's genuinely shocking.

The penultimate scene is hilariously silly but you can't help loving it, the film in general and the arresting sight of Di Lazzaro as Delon's younger (of course) partner.

    I honestly can't fault it.

    Four immersive, devestating one-shot episodes.

Career best work from Stephen Graham and co-creator/writer Jack Thorne, however director Barantini deserves equal credit.

Exemplary in its conception and execution, with startling performances across the board.

Episode 3 is possibly the absolute highpoint, however Graham's own work at the end of the final chapter will leave you in pieces.

A British TV classic for the ages.

What a perfectly amiable piece of fluff.

The plot mechanics are so clunky and obvious in the way the pieces are shifted/manipulated into place that it's almost embarrassing to watch it all unfold.

A visual and aural feast for the senses. Masterfully ramps up the menace and sustains the terror to great effect.

Not sure the performances necessarily rise to Eggers' intended level; the arch dialogue produces the expected quota of silly, unintentionally funny moments. I preferred Coppola's scene-eating Hopkins over Defoe. But style over substance eventually wins out.

This won't replace The Lighthouse as my favourite of the Eggers quartet, however it's a massive uptick from the absurdly overrated The Northman.
