Part 1 was a perfect fairytale of the post-war boom, where America’s nouveau riche had unlimited cash to throw at vanity projects helmed by Europe’s most visionary bohemians. Part 2 revealed to the visionary, and to the film itself, that there is a price to pay in the pursuit of such lofty ambitions. To the former, the cost was his soul; the latter paid the price in pacing and thematic coherence.
Also, maybe I’m just too commie-brained, but the epilogue contained a subtle, weirdly pro-Israel message? Idk, real purty picture tho, go see it in 70mm
