This is another worthy entry in Sheridan's series on weary and vulnerable protagonists, though not the best film made from his material. It's not as morally nuanced as Sicario and doesn't quite master its landscape like Hell or High Water. As a director, Sheridan may not possess Denis Villeneuve's eye for meticulous craft, but he delivers set pieces that are similarly masterful at eliciting exhilaration and tension. Jordan Peele, wow.
This was a revelation. An insanely well-made movie. Great tone. Consistently taut with just the right amount of levity. Gem after gem in the performances, particularly Betty Gabriel as Georgina. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed the collective performances from a cast this much, but even still, Peele's direction really shines. In terms of inspiring wonderment as an actioner and cinematic showcase, this definitely brings to mind initial viewings of Speed, T2, and (for me) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. On a dramatic level, I thought this was far superior to Under the Skin and Her. The film continually propels itself forward and avoids the trap of redundancy that those two couldn't avoid. Ultimately, I found it more resonating, more thought provoking, as the audience's assumptions and hopes for these characters are challenged from scene-to-scene, moment-to-moment.
