Martha 2024
Massive step down from Cutler’s excellent Billie doc. Someone please shoot this omnipresent form of ~raw, unfiltered~ but actually quite sanctioned celeb portraiture doc into the sun and start the genre over with something new. Truly plays like it was plugged into an iMovie template of every single one of the other 800 docs like it.
And the ghastly prison illustrations, man. Martha leading a lecture hall with a “You can do it!” speech before a storybook crowd of beaming, eager, perfectly diverse, and grateful inmates? What are we even doing here?

Fine, crowd-pleasing fare. Not the doc’s obligation to aim a critical lens at the more insidious elements of the YouTube economy, but it’s hard not to think of when the music soars over gushing testimonies extolling the virtues of the platform. Oh well.
