Utterly abysmal.
Totally destroyed by smothering the film in pointless CGI, a poor script, atrocious acting, a complete lack of chemistry between the Christensen and Portman as romantic leads, banal, simplistic politics, flesh-crawlingly awful dialogue, absolutely no character development and a totally leaky story.
Christensen is at turns pathetic and whining, then a creepy stalker, MacGregor isn’t given anything to do beyond his bizarre Alec Guinness impersonation, Portman goes through the motions and Samuel L Jackson utterly wasted.

No, it isn’t an era defining, cultural, philosophical and psychedelic landmark like 2001. What it is is a solid, enjoyable, well-acted science fiction film with an excellent cast, more identifiable characters, greater development of said characters and a worthy continuation of the story.
Four episodes in and this series is undoubtedly high quality, well acted and effective at demonstrating the particular facets and brutality of the war in the Pacific for the United States and The Marines. Undoubtedly the comparison for The Pacific will be its predecessor, Band of Brothers.
Initial thoughts are that so far (and this is no fault of the production by any means) it’s more difficult to align oneself to the overall ebb and flow of the actual war…
