Timothée really sells it, and there’s some really solid cinematography here (the lighting in particular is pretty inspired). In its haste to jump from song to song, though, the script falls flat.

Woman of the Hour 2023
I thought this was a pretty solid directorial debut for Anna Kendrick. The guiding hand behind the camera goes a long way in communicating much of the film’s subtext, and it manages to achieve an appropriately unsettling atmosphere. Additionally, in an age of ever-increasing runtimes, I appreciate the restraint shown keeping this down to a lean 94 minutes, which I think was a perfect length for this offering.

Grave of the Fireflies 1988
This has a beauty and artistry in its visual presentation which we all know to expect from any Studio Ghibli film, but absent the usual whimsical optimism. This movie is bleak, but it’s all the more affecting and compelling for it.
