A misanthrope is less than a man. A misanthrope who rats out other to the police is barely a beast.
First time watching Tarr's work proper. Loved it. Took a while to get used to the long shots, but once you find the rhythm of the shots, you learn to love them.
A really interesting film, starts off very strong, the ending is so weak it makes the rest of it weaker. Love the visuals, the early characterisation (especially of Cesar), hated the last third and the treatment of women in the film. If I could sum up the theme of this film, and the ending in particular: life beyond chivalry. Gawain can either choose to follow the myth and uphold a social order become a knight and eventually take power, mistreating people (in particular women) of lower class and forever fearing this precarious hierarchy will fall out underneath him, or he can choose to treat people right, and choose to be honest. He chooses the latter. May we all do the same. Cinematography was great. Loved the use of lighting in it. Imagery was very nice.
