Perfect. I’ve been giddy since watching the last part. Keep your eyes on the old lady. She’s astounding.
Cassavetes meets Korine. Close to absolutely astounding. Hopper’s sense of space is complex & stunning. Linda Manz is one of the strangest, most compelling actresses. The madness of scenes echoes Cassavetes. The ending is awkward but punk fucking rock. Trauma endured.
A perfect film — but it takes time to learn how to watch. I suggest watching it throughout an afternoon. It’s a film to be dwelled in, to be draped in. And the way PTA got so up into Pynchon will never cease to astound me. And Joaquin! As my friend RKW says, JP is our greatest mumbler.
I was pleasantly surprised by how smart this movie is. It gives us one of the best confrontations with difference — a confrontation that cannot be explained (the movie violently rejects colonial anthropology’s will to turn difference into ‘knowledge.’). It makes for an odd (in the best sense) horror movie for wherein lies the horror? The Swedes are simply leading their lives, infusing death with profound meaning.
