Cord Jefferson wrote for a John Cazale number of the best tv shows of the past ten years (Watchmen, The Good Place, Succession, Station Eleven), and Jeffrey Wright is Jeffrey Wright, so I couldn't be more excited for this movie. It is a very enjoyable and fun watch, an okay satire, and a great showcase for the actors. I'm not sure it's a great movie, though.
The movie does suffer a bit from Shrek Syndrome, which is when a movie…

I was hoping this movie would redeem itself for me since it's been so long since I've last seen it, especially now that I'm showing the trilogy to my kids, but alas, it didn't. Aside from the novelty of the setting (which was still appealing for the Boomers who made the movie, but not really anymore for my generation), and some questionable character development for Doc, Part III feels like a rethread, and not in a fun, let's have a…

I've seen a lot of divided opinions about this movie, and I guess I could see it not working for some people. It's not just a sports movie, it's not just a slick love triangle movie, it's not just a comedic melodrama (?), it's not just about lifelong friendship and loyalty, it's not just about privilege, shattered dreams, betrayal, controlling other people, and making the best out of your situation. It's all of those things, and if Guadagnino achieved the…

For a movie directed by someone with 15 years of experience, The Invitation has too much of a student film vibe. It's not bad, but some of the dialogue is pretty contrived, and acting is, aside from the great John Carroll Lynch, overly dramatic. The sully protagonist makes it very hard to stay too much on his side. The whole movie feels heavy-handed, with in-your-face metaphors and musical cues.
Other than that, I like the slow burn and the confined…

This one was on my watchlist for a very long time. I guess it was worth the wait, because seeing it so close after the Mad Men finale really makes you think.
Besides covering a similar timeframe (59-63 for the movie, 59-70 for the show), they also share a protagonist that is talented and successful, but conflicted about his role in society. Both are womanizers, prone to isolation fits, with laid back business partners that try to lighten the mood…
