    The Trial

    ★★★★

The Trial is amazing at placing you in the shoes of its main character. Josef K, played by Anthony Perkins is accused of a crime and has no idea what it is. He has no idea how he’s being prosecuted, no idea how this government or criminal system works. And neither to the audience. Orson Welles manages to craft a twisty, disorienting film that makes no sense to anyone and it works because it accomplishes that goal.

    The Passion of the Christ

    ★★

The Passion of the Christ is a moment of genius marketing.  In 2004 the biblical film doesn’t carry the box office weight it did back in the 50s. So how did this become a blockbuster? Because Mel Gibson managed to leverage human curiosity with morbidity. It’s amazing when I think about it.

There are films like The Robe, Cecil B. DeMille’s King of Kings, the 1961 King of Kings, Martin Scorsese’s Last Temptation of Christ. These are films that offer…
